A new research study at Cardiff University, has found the first evidence that attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a genetic condition. Scientists have found kids with ADHD more likely to have small segments of their DNA duplicated or missing.
Additionally, research indicates a significant overlap between segments known as copy number variants (CNVs), and genetic variants implicated in autism and schizophrenia — which is strong evidence that ADHD is a neurodevelopmental disorder. There is a great deal of stigma around kids with ADHD and their parents, and scientific proof that ADHD is a genetic disease, and that children with this condition have brains that develop differently then those of other children, may be helpful in reducing that stigma.
