Clinical depression in preschoolers is rare- most estimates are under 2% of the population (compared to 15% and upwards for adolescents). In a recent Canadian study, researchers found two main predictors for early onset depression and anxiety: a “difficult” temperament at age 5 months and lifetime maternal depression (in that order). This information provides enormous possibility for early intervention and prevention of clinical level disorders.
